This area is sometimes called the "Blue Land" because of the large number of lakes. The tour starts in the famous city of Garmisch Partenkirchen, located by the highest mountain in Germany, Mount Zugspitze. You will follow the river trail along the Isar River, passing picturesque Lake Tegernsee and the spa city of Bad Tölz. The trail continues through farmland and many little hamlets, as well as the hilly countryside just outside of Munich. This is a chance to experience authentic Bavaria with its steepled churches, beer gardens, monasteries and warm hospitality.
Tour Details: The route winds through a slightly hilly area passing scenic lakes and villages. On the first few days, the landscape offers alpine views. Later, the landscape flattens to pastures and lakes. To enjoy this tour, you should have an above average fitness level. There will be some short but steep ascents, followed by steep descents. Day 2: Garmisch Partenkirchen - Isar Valley - Lake Tegernsee - Bad Tölz 95 km, +1031 Hm, - 1091 Hm Get ready, because today's tour begins with a strenuous 11km uphill climb! From there, things get easier as you follow the Isar River to Sylvenstein. After another short ascent you arrive at Lake Tegernsee, a popular spot in Bavaria where many wealthy people from Munich have vacation homes. You might see some famous people! End the day's tour by riding through farmland to the small city of Bad Tölz. Stroll around and explore the main square with old houses, specialty stores and coffee shops. You'll enjoy a night's stay in Bad Tolz. Day 3: Bad Tölz - Munich, 105 km, +- 1.100 Hm Optional: Train to Munich - cycle tour back to Bad Tölz, 70 km, +-600 Hm Today's ride takes you through the slightly hilly landscape just out of Munich with tiny villages and farmland dotted with wooden barns. Soon the Bavarian Alps come into view. If you decided to take the train to Munich, you'll then ride through the Perlacher Forest until you reach open meadows with breath-taking views of the Alps. Rest your head in your comfortable hotel in Bad Tolz. Day 4: Bad Tölz - Lake Walchensee - Lake Kochelsee - Murnau 85 km, +943 Hm, -911 Hm The bike ride today starts in the Isar valley and goes upwards to Lake Walchensee. Then travel on a smaller mountain pass downhill. The route involves serpentine riding to Lake Kochelsee. The last part of the route goes by the marshland of Murnau, offering views of fields and wildflowers. Your hotel this evening will be in Munau or the surrounding area. Day 5: Roundtrip tour into the "Blue Country" 80 - 100 km, +- 1100 Hm Today's bike route takes you among wooded landscapes and lakes in a nature preserve. The route is slightly hilly, but you can enjoy fantastic scenery while pedaling. The trail offers views of the Alps, numerous beer gardens and small hamlets that make you feel you've stepped back in time. Tonight's hotel will be in the Murnau area. Day 6: Murnau - Oberammergau - Lake Eibsee - Garmisch Partenkirchen 90 km, + 1250 Hm, - 1085 Hm This morning, leave your hotel and bike a gentle, rolling path to Lake Staffelsee. That path takes you to the city of Oberammergau, home of the world-famous Passion Play, held every ten years. Take time to visit the Schloss Linderhof castle. Back on the trail, you'll go on a short but demanding mountain pass to Lake Eibsee which is at the edge of Mount Zugspitze. If you want, take the cable car running up to the summit with a small glacier and view to the Alps. Tonight you'll stay in a cozy Garmisch Partenkirchen hotel. Day 7: Departure from Garmisch Partenkirchen Time to leave this lovely area and start planning when you'll return!
