However, when leaving the Salzburg area, you'll cross over mountain passes. Some have gradual ascents while others require a strong level of physical fitness. On this tour, the route goes through the medium sized mountains of Salzburg, Upper Austria, Styria and Bavaria.
You'll enjoy an overnight stay in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hallstatt, passing crystal clear lakes and scenic alpine pastures dotted with chalets. Arrival/Departure from Salzburg. - From airport you take the city bus to the city centre (maybe you have to change the bus to get to your hotel) or you take a taxi. The airport is only 3 km away from the city centre. - From the train station you also may take the city bus or a taxi to your hotel. - If you arrive with the car please take care that you have a "Vignette" for the motorway around Salzburg otherwise is can be very expensive if you get caught. You will get the Vignette e.g. at the border petrol stations. There will be no fee parking at the partner hotels but there are garage close by. Prices are around 53,- Euros per week.

Day 2: Salzburg - Bavaria - Salzburg Your tour begins by following the castle road out of the city to cross the border into Bavaria. Enjoy a boat trip on photogenic Lake Königssee. Afterwards, bike through the National Park of Berchtesgaden and around the massive mountains of Untersberg. If you are energetic and in good shape, ride up the mountain road where you will have a wonderful view over Salzburg and the famous Eagles Nest in Berchtesgaden. Enjoy a restful night in your Salzburg hotel . 70 to 90 Km, difference in altitude + 450 to + 1.450 meters and - 550 to - 1.550 meters Day 3: From Salzburg to the World Heritage Site of Hallstatt/Bad Goisern Today's route starts on the bike trail along the Salzach River. Right afterwards you will have two choices to get to Hallstatt. The more demanding one leads you up to a high road with awe inspiring views. The alternate route follows the river valley to Golling. From there, bike into the Lammer Valley where you'll cross the first mountain pass into Upper Austria. Here you will see the picturesque mountain lake of Gosau. On clear days the glacier on Mount Dachstein is visible. End your tour by biking to Lake Hallstatt and visiting the picture-postcard village of Hallstatt. Your hotel can be in Hallstatt or Bad Goisern this evening. . 85 to 105 Km, difference in altitude + 750 to +1.250 meters and - 620 to - 1.100 meters Day 4: Round trip tour into the Ausseerland This morning you'll start with a scenic train ride to the area known as Ausseerland in Styria. You'll have the option of riding up mountain roads to lush alpine pastures or taking it easy by staying in the valley. Whatever you choose, you'll be surrounded by typical alpine huts with geranium filled window baskets and an abundance of shops and restaurants. The alpine pastures provide great views to the Mount Dachstein glacier and lakes in the valleys. Return to Hallstatt in the evening. . 80 to 107 Km, difference in altitude + 705 to + 1.050 meters and - 550 to - 1.010 meters Day 5: From lake Hallstatt to lake Attersee Enjoy an easy ride today to visit the famous emperor city of Bad Ischl. Follow the road along the lake and then get on the Brine Pipeline Road to Bad Ischl. The trail leads you to Lake Wolfgangsee and the the Mozart village of St. Gilgen and on to Lake Mondsee. There you'll see the view shown at the beginning of Sound of Music. Your hotel this evening is in St. Georgen, only a few minutes away from Lake Attersee. . 70 to 90 Km, difference in altitude + 550 to + 750 meters and - 420 to - 560 meters Day 6: Round trip tour to Lake Traunsee Today's route offers a change in scenery. You will bike in the slightly hilly area to the beautiful city of Gmunden. Enjoy the view with coffee and pastries at the lake promenade. The old town is also worth seeing. Afterwards the route leads uphill to the "Devil Mountains" mountain range. You'll be rewarded with a spectacular view from where you just came. The trail then heads downhill around Lake Attersee to your hotel in St. Georgen. If you like, simply take the boat across the lake to the hotel. . 85 Km, difference in altitude + 790 meters and - 650 meters Day 7: From lake Attersee to the festival city of Salzburg Leave your hotel this morning and head to the festival city of Salzburg. Enjoy lush meadows and little hamlets as you make your way to Lake Mondsee. Be sure to visit the church where Maria and the Captain got married in The Sound of Music. The landscape will change as you ride through gentle, rolling hills next to shimmering lakes. Leaving Mondsee, you'll pass Lake Irrsee. Then comes the only real climb of today which is up to "Summer Wood" where you'll find a little church and an impressive view backwards to the lake and mountain district. The route continues on the rolling hills through woods, fields and hamlets. The last 12 km takes you on the former railway path Salzburg - Bad Ischl. The route is downhill until you reach the Salzach River.
